ANSWER THE QUESTION
Not yet published
Last week, a local newspaper reported that College of Lake
County President Richard Fonte refused to answer a question about financial
concerns at the college and I can't get the story out of my mind. Apparently
he tried to defend his refusal by claiming the question was "political"
but faculty in political science disagree and quite frankly so do I. Font's
response leads me to believe he is side-stepping accountability, not only
to the faculty and staff at CLC but also to students and the public. It makes
me wonder why.
How is it that a "leader" of such a vital public institution like
CLC can be so petulant and autocratic? And why are the CLC Board of Trustees
not demanding both an answer and an apology for such poor behavior?
The question wasn't political, but his refusal to answer certainly is. The
faculty at CLC have created a political action committee and are supporting
John W. Lumber and O.H. Michael Smith for the two open seats on the Board
of Trustees. From what I've been reading, these two candidates are the best
choices for positive change at the CLC. I'll be voting for them on April 17.
